AMC vs In-House IT vs Pay-As-You-Go Support: Which Is Cheaper in Dubai?

AMC vs In-House IT vs Pay-As-You-Go Support: Which Is Cheaper in Dubai?

Every growing office hits the same question: who looks after our IT? You can sign an annual maintenance contract (AMC), hire someone, or call an engineer only when something breaks.

Each one looks cheapest from a different angle. Pay-as-you-go has the lowest monthly cost, an employee feels the most in your control, and an AMC feels like a bill you can't skip. The honest answer depends on your size and your risk. This guide shows how to work out the real cost of each, with numbers you can adapt.

Which is cheaper: AMC, in-house IT or pay-as-you-go?

For most small offices in Dubai with 5 to 30 staff, an IT AMC is the cheapest option over a full year once you count everything. Pay-as-you-go is cheapest only if your IT rarely breaks and you accept the risk of one expensive emergency. Hiring an in-house IT person usually costs more than both, because salary is only part of the bill, and one person can't cover leave, sickness or every technical skill. In-house starts to pay off when your IT workload keeps a full-time person busy.

The three options in one minute

OptionHow you payBest for
IT AMCFixed monthly or annual feeSmall and mid-size offices
In-house IT
Pay-as-you-go
Salary plus employment costs
Per call-out or per hour
Large, IT-heavy companies
Very small, simple offices

Option 1: IT AMC

How it works. You sign a fixed-term contract, usually 12 months, covering support, maintenance and repairs for an agreed list of devices and systems. New to AMCs? Read what IT AMC is and what it covers.

What it really costs. A fixed fee, which scales with your users and devices. Published small-office plans in Dubai start around AED 500 per month for basic remote cover and reach roughly AED 1,500 per month for plans with on-site visits and more devices.

Strengths

  • Predictable budget with no surprise call-out invoices
  • A team, not one person, so no single point of failure
  • Faster response, because you're a contract client
  • Preventive maintenance catches problems early

Weaknesses

  • You pay even in a quiet month
  • Exclusions can add cost, such as parts, security, backup or projects
  • Quality varies, so check response times and scope in writing

Cheapest when: you have steady, everyday IT needs and want to avoid big surprises.

Option 2: In-house IT

How it works. You hire an IT support person or technician who works in your office.

What it really costs. The salary is the visible part. GulfTalent puts the average IT support salary in Dubai at around AED 5,000 per month, with higher-end roles reaching about AED 8,500. Then add the costs that don't appear on the job advert:

  • Visa and employment processing
  • Health insurance, which employers in Dubai must provide
  • End-of-service gratuity under UAE labour law
  • Paid annual leave and sick leave
  • Recruitment time or agency fees
  • A laptop, software, remote-support and monitoring tools
  • Training and certifications
  • Cover costs when they're away

Strengths

  • Someone is on site every day
  • Deep knowledge of your own systems
  • Quick help for small daily issues

Weaknesses

  • One person can't be an expert in networks, security, cloud and backup
  • No cover for holidays, sickness or resignation
  • If they leave, their knowledge leaves with them
  • Hardest to scale up or down

Cheapest when: your IT workload is large enough to keep one person busy all day, and you add outside help for specialist work.

Option 3: Pay-as-you-go

How it works. You call an IT company when something breaks and pay per visit or per hour. There is no contract.

What it really costs. It depends entirely on how often things break and how serious they are. Rates vary by provider, so ask for a written rate card before you need help, including the minimum charge, hourly rate, call-out fee and after-hours surcharge.

Strengths

  • No monthly commitment
  • Low cost in a quiet year
  • Freedom to switch providers

Weaknesses

  • Bills are unpredictable
  • Contract clients usually get served first
  • The provider doesn't know your setup, so every fix starts from scratch
  • No preventive maintenance, so small problems become emergencies
  • A single big incident can cost more than a year of an AMC

Cheapest when: you have a tiny office with simple needs and rarely need help.

A 3-year cost example

The numbers below are illustrations to show how to think about cost, not quotes. Replace them with your own.

Assumptions: a 10-person office, all figures before 5% VAT.

  • AMC: AED 1,500 per month
  • In-house: AED 5,000 per month salary, nothing else counted
  • Pay-as-you-go: 12 call-outs a year at AED 300 each, plus one major incident in three years costing AED 25,000 in repairs and lost working time
OptionYear 13 years
IT AMCAED 18,000AED 54,000
In-house (salary only)
Pay-as-you-go
AED 60,000
AED 3,600
AED 180,000
AED 35,800

At first glance pay-as-you-go wins on cost. But it only wins in this example because the incident is assumed to happen once. Add a second incident, or more call-outs, and the gap closes. And that example still excludes the in-house extras listed above, so the real in-house number is higher.

How to run your own numbers

  1. AMC: quoted monthly fee × 12 × 3
  2. In-house: (monthly salary + monthly extras) × 12 × 3
  3. Pay-as-you-go: (call-outs per year × average bill × 3) + (cost of one serious incident × how many you expect)

The cost most people forget: downtime

Support isn't just about repair bills. It's about how long your team can't work.

Formula: staff affected × hourly cost per person × hours down, plus any lost sales.

Example: 10 staff costing the business AED 40 an hour each, offline for 4 hours, is AED 1,600 in idle pay alone, before counting a single missed order or client.

This is why response time matters more than most people expect. A contract with a 2-hour response target can pay for itself in one incident, while waiting a day for a pay-as-you-go engineer multiplies the loss.

What none of them cover automatically

Whichever option you choose, check these three:

  • Security. Email filtering, endpoint protection and MFA are often add-ons.
  • Backup. Make sure someone monitors it and tests restores.
  • Projects. Office moves, new staff setup and upgrades are often charged separately.

Cost per month means nothing if these are missing.

The hybrid option

Many Dubai businesses mix approaches, and it often works best:

  • In-house + AMC. Your IT person handles daily requests, and an AMC covers hardware, on-site help, holidays and specialist work.
  • AMC + pay-as-you-go for projects. The contract covers everyday support, and you buy extra hours for big jobs.
  • AMC + managed security. Basic support under contract, with proactive security and backup added where the risk is highest. See IT AMC vs managed IT services.

Which one should you choose?

Best fit

5 to 30 staff, steady needs
Under 5 staff, simple setup
50+ staff, daily IT demand
Sensitive data, no IT staff
Opening a new office
Can't afford any downtime
IT AMC
Pay-as-you-go or basic AMC
In-house + AMC
AMC with security and backup
AMC or project + AMC
AMC with fast response

6 questions to decide

  1. How often does IT cause problems for you? Weekly, monthly or rarely?
  2. What does an hour of downtime cost? Use the formula above.
  3. Do you have anyone who can fix IT issues? Even partly?
  4. Do you handle sensitive data? Client files, finances or records raise the stakes.
  5. Are you growing or moving soon? Flexible, scalable support helps.
  6. How much budget certainty do you need? Fixed fees help planning, and variable bills don't.

6 mistakes to avoid

  1. Comparing a salary with a fee. Compare total cost, including every extra.
  2. Ignoring downtime. The cheapest option on paper can cost more in lost time.
  3. Skipping the scope. Two AMC prices can cover very different things.
  4. Never reading the rate card. Pay-as-you-go surprises usually come from the fine print.
  5. Relying on one person. If they leave or fall ill, support stops.
  6. Staying with a plan you've outgrown. Review your cover every year.

Frequently asked questions

Is IT AMC cheaper than hiring an IT person in Dubai?

For most small offices, yes. An in-house IT employee costs roughly AED 5,000 per month in salary on average, plus visa, insurance, gratuity, leave and tools, and can't cover absences or every skill. An AMC gives you a team for a fixed fee.

Is pay-as-you-go IT support worth it?

It can work for very small offices that rarely need help. But one serious incident can cost more than a year of a contract, and pay-as-you-go clients are usually not the first in the queue.

When does hiring in-house IT make sense?

When your IT workload keeps one person busy all day, usually in larger companies. Even then, many firms keep an outside partner for specialist work and cover.

What is the break-even point between AMC and in-house IT?

When your outside support costs would approach the full cost of an employee, including salary and all the extras. For most small offices that point is far away, which is why outsourcing is usually cheaper.

Can I combine in-house IT with an AMC?

Yes. It's a common setup. The employee handles daily requests, and the AMC covers hardware, on-site work, holidays and specialist skills.

Is VAT charged on IT support in Dubai?

Yes. UAE VAT is 5%, so check whether quotes include it.

Can I switch from pay-as-you-go to an AMC later?

Yes. Many businesses switch after their first costly emergency. Ask the new provider to audit your setup and give you a written scope and itemised quote.

Does Byteflow provide IT AMC in JLT and other Dubai areas?

Yes. Byteflow supports businesses across Dubai, including JLT, Business Bay, Deira and Al Quoz.
